The 2016 Single-Family Rental Summit brought together every facet of the mortgage investment realm for three days of unsurpassed SFR learning.
Among the companies in attendance were Altisource, ReVest Capital, BlackRock, OwnAmerica, Investability, Renters Warehouse, Rently, and Alacrity Services. Each of the companies had a representative that participated in the discussions about investment tactics, lending options, acquisition and disposition, and rehab and property management. Each of the five sessions was full of information useful to investors and agents alike and offered insight only found with the experts. The first session, Property Acquisition, included a state of the market update given by Rick Sharga, Chief Marketing Officer of Ten-X, and then dove into the discussion with strategic advice given from a panel including Brennan Reid, CEO of Joyce Reid Capital and Alex Hemani, President and CEO of Alna Properties. The panel discussed topics like producing vs. non-producing properties, how to evaluate portfolios, and where to find the best markets. This discussion was promptly followed by a discussion about the pros and cons of portfolio buying and cherry-picking strategies and was led by moderator C. Jay Byce, SVP of Real Estate Acquisitions at Altisource. D’Arcy Young, President of Residential Recovery Partners, Thibault Adrien, CEO of Lafayette Real Estate, and Andrew Lester, Partner at GilFund, finished the session with advice on the strategies they use successfully, and how to adjust them to your needs. The Disposition Session covered information including actions to ensure adaptability in the market and portfolio pruning advice. The session consisted of two discussion panels that were moderated by Greg Rand, CEO of OwnAmerica and Paul Yazbeck, VP of Investment Sales at SVN. Topics for the session included how to decide which repairs are necessary, where to find good help, and how to improve your tenants’ rental experience. The session was moderated by Kevin Ortner, CEO of Renters Warehouse and Sam Tucci, VP Business Operations of U.S. Best Repair Service, and tackled every aspect of proper property management procedures and inexpensive rehabbing techniques. The session commenced with a presentation by Puneet Singh, Managing Partner of Kimball, Tirey & St. John, who spoke about how to avoid litigation from tenants and employees and the proper procedures for handling a suit accordingly. The final session discussed the technology platforms, productivity, and issues that surround today’s SFR market. They gave advice on how to use mobile technology to your advantage, as well as what risk is involved and how to avoid it.
The Single-Family Rental Summit was a success in 2016, with presenters, participators, and attendees from across the country. A growing sentiment of enthusiasm was felt by all throughout the Summit, and attendees went home with information and strategies to implement in the coming year.
